Allegations of Research Misconduct

PRISMA is committed to handling allegations of research-integrity violations objectively, fairly, confidentially, and transparently.

Misconduct may include data fabrication, data falsification, plagiarism, duplicate publication, citation manipulation, manipulation of the peer-review process, misuse of confidential information, and violations of research ethics.

The handling process consists of the following stages:

1. Receipt of Report

The editor receives an allegation from an author, reviewer, reader, institution, or other party with relevant information.

2. Preliminary Assessment

The editor assesses the completeness of the information, the credibility of the report, and the relevance of the available evidence.

3. Clarification

The reported party is given an opportunity to provide an explanation and supporting documents.

4. Further Examination

The editor may consult an independent expert or request the researcher’s institution to conduct an investigation when necessary.

5. Decision and Action

Actions may include a request for correction, rejection of the manuscript, publication of a correction, an editorial expression of concern, or retraction of the article.

6. Documentation and Resolution

The editor documents the examination process and decision while maintaining confidentiality and protecting the rights of the parties involved.

In handling alleged misconduct, PRISMA refers to the principles and guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
